INDIA AT 78rpm
Excerpt from a work in progress,
2009 (16 minutes)
An excerpt from a project about 78rpm records and the intersection of folk and classical musical traditions in India. Mostly filmed in 2008 in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, including processions, street musicians and an interview with an Indian 78 collector. Ideally this will be a feature length documentary and will also focus on the very earliest recordings made in India.

MY FRIEND RAIN
Sublime Frequencies, 2007.
(36 minutes)
Filmed on various trips through Southeast Asia by Robert Millis and Alan Bishop from 2002 to 2007, My Friend Rain is an impressionistic collage of musical segments and tropical ambiance. Decay and rebirth through the endless Asian monsoon cycle. Locations include: Myanmar (Burma), Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Indonesia.

DJ/field recordings - music from Victrola favs, Sublime frequencies comps, & other surprises.

"PHI TA KHON" (Robert Millis) is a ghost festival that takes place every year in the Isan province of Northern Thailand. Colorful masks, MoLam music, magnificent costumes, and phallic icons of all sizes, Phi Ta Khon is a mind-blowing and obscure tradition hidden in the interior of the Indochine peninsula."

"The Cinema of Transgression"
Friday April 10, 2009
The Films of Richard Kern and Nick Zedd

"Convulsive, controversial and strictly over-the-top. the works of both Richard Kern and Nick Zedd have long been considered the sine qua non of in-your-face filmmaking. Not for the faint of heart nor weak of stomach, this is film for connoisseurs of the dank and the dangerous. Frankly and stankly erotical.

Admission is free.
Over 18 only."

Mastodon In Store at Criminal Records

From the Criminal Records website ...

"Due to an overwhelming repsonse from the public, Criminal Records has had to modify how it will handle the upcoming Mastodon in-store performance on Tuesday, March 24th. The store will be closed (for a brief time) at 8 pm, so that we may re-organize to enhance our customers enjoyment of the show. Upon re-opening, customers that have a Criminal Records receipt from purchase of "Crack The Skye" will be given priority to enter the store. Also, due to space constraints and security concerns we will limit the number of people allowed in the store to 300. Thanks for your understanding."

It is going to be crazy at Criminal ... No way are they going to fit everyone that wants to go.
Good Luck!

Our Heat Your Moisture Comp 1998

This cd compilation was put together by my old PV band mates Mitch and Clara back in 1998. I really like a lot of the music on here and since it is essentially out of print I figure I would turn on some of you to it's goodness. There was an awesome cd release show held in Atlanta on April 11 1998 at the Somber Reptile. There were 3 stages set up for the bands and most represented that day.

The track listing is as follows:
1. Firestorm - Broken Symmetry (atlanta)
2. On All Fours - Another Dead Sharon (atlanta)
3. Ape Limpin Log Cabin - Melted Men (athens)
4. Fearful Symmetry - God is My Co-Pilot (NYC)
5. Gull Bite - Turkish Delight (boston)
6. Grunt, Peel and Eat - Routerwhelm (atlanta)
7. Cunnilmingus - William Carlos Williams (atlanta)
8. A Newer World - Remora (north carolina)
9. Chef Boy Ardee Alien Boy - Glenn Lizzy (athens??)
10. He Said She Won't Dance with Me - Pineal Ventana (atlanta)
11. Deep From Sleep Awake - Go-Fi (nj/ny)
12. WWIII - Thin White Dukes (atlanta)
13. Dog, Thee of Hair - Charlie Parker (atlanta)
14. Chapel Birds - Who Killed Teacher (morgantown wv)
15. Videodrome - Eta Carinae (atlanta)
16. Three Headed Cow - Heinous Beinfang (atlanta)

REVIEWS

Mitchell Foy and Clara Clamp (Pineal Ventana) use their Atlanta-based SCUSS Media to promote varied and challenging experimentation on their compilation. The limited edition of 500 copies comes in a hand-printed and assembled tar paper cover. 26 projects are presented from Georgia, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Boston, Michigan, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Some are recognized and important rock-based, boundary challengers like God Is My Co-Pilot, William Carlos Williams, Morsel, and Pineal Ventana. As for God Is My Co-Pilot, there is another interesting project here of dulcet female vocals over jerky guitar and bass rhythms, New Jersey's Suran Song in Stage. Some of the bands sound like clever sample manipulators working in their bedroom with four-tracks (Another Dead Sharon and Melted Men for example). Regardless of their notoriety or method, most of these artists give us something oddly delightful, like the inexplicable dervishes of few words, Turkish Delight. Noisy and experimental, clamorous and eclectic, there is a certain similarity here in a cohesive vision of damaged art based on quirky rhythms and dissonant guitars. One also finds that many of the Georgia bands boast similarly styled names: Glenn Lizzy, Medaglia D'oro, Mary Baked Eddie, Bob, and Dan Acaroid Resin Factory. One wonders if this isn't a revolving cast of the Pineal Ventana crowd, la San Fran's similarly cacophonous and moniker-happy Caroliner network. Regardless of any manipulations of personnel, the manipulations presented here from the basic rock combo are generally refreshing and worthwhile. ~ Tom Schulte, All Music Guide

Our Heat (Your Moisture)
(self-released)
reviewed in issue #165, 8/17/98 A&A Archives
A couple of the fine folks from Pineal Ventana put this compilation together. Seventeen of the 26 bands hail from Atlanta or Athens (Ga.), with the rest coming from places east of the Mississippi.

If you know Pineal Ventana, then you might know what to expect here. Plenty of rather unusual (most would use the phrase "fucking weird") music (again, some might disagree with the term "music"). Heinous Bienfang (reviewed earlier in the issue) is here, as is Pineal Ventana, Go Is My Co-Pilot (see?), William Carlos Williams (also reviewed in this issue), Tweezer and one of my favorites, Morsel (from Michigan).

Pretty much indescribable as a whole, but if you're a Skin Graft fan, or otherwise someone who digs the whole noise pop movement (emphasis on noise, probably), well, there's a trove of treasure on this disc.

It may be fucking weird, but others might use the word "brilliant".

NYC Trip

So I spent a few days in NYC/Brooklyn/Bushwick last week with some friends. Endured the cold weather, long walks and subway rides to hang with old friends. Spent a day at Seizures Palace studio, that my friend and old bandmate Jason owns, a day walking from Canal st up into Central park, and a day just hanging round Manhattan before a show at lit Lounge Sat night.

The lineup at Lit Lounge was sort of an Atlanta reunion. Grasso Electtrica was the first band on the bill. Our old friend Jeremy is the singer/guitarist. He is from Pittsburgh/Morgantown but lived in Atlanta for a few years. We go back to Pineal Ventana days with Jeremy.

Next up was Lonesome. The newest project with the singer from Pineal Ventana. Band members include Wade on drums, Mega on Bass, Shane on guitar and Danette on vocals. All Atlanta peeps!

Hallux was amazing. Atlanta peeps included Jason Lafarge on bass, Andrew Barker on guitar and Hans Chew on drums. All living in NYC now. They play heavy, dirty, sludge metal.

Child Abuse was the final band on the bill. I only saw a few songs but loved it! Frantic, noisey and crazy. No Atlanta peeps in this band.

MiAmi & Thank You @ 529 E Atlanta

Friday March 6th there is a great show happening at 529 in E Atlanta Village. MiAmi from San Francisco and Thank You from Baltimore will be coming through town.

MiAmi reminds me a bit of Gang Gang Dance. Great beats and interesting vocals. Definitely not a typical run of the mill rock band. Very percussive, jerky at times, ambient at times ... great soundscapes!!!!

MiAmi Mp3 - New Guitar

Thank You, from Baltimore are taking the middle slot with Untied States opening.
Thank You are pretty cool from the few tracks I have heard. I would say they are a bit noise rock, drone, intense sounds. So hard to describe bands. haha. Break down then build back up I guess.

Thank You Mp3-Empty Legs
Video below:

Untied States are a local band here in Atlanta. They have gone through numerous member changes over the years but have continued to write some good stuff and be a mainstay in the noisier rock scene of Atl.

Crystal Antlers "Tentacles" April 7th Release

So the first full-length from this California band will hit stores on April 7th and entitled "Tentacles." Touch & Go has released the first single off the album. Crystal Antlers sound leans toward very layered guitars and literally a wall of sound hitting you from all directions. The recordings remind me of the Rock-a-teens sound. Not that these 2 bands sound alike, as they don't, it is just the way the music comes across in the recordings. Intense and building layers of sounds. Can't wait to hear the whole album.

Nice to have snow every once in a while here in Atlanta.
