Sat Night @ Fishmarket

So I am going to check out a few bands at the Fishmarket here in Atlanta. I have never been to this particular space but it is in the West End warehouses that I only know by their corresponding letters and numbers. Fishmarket is at D12. I think I remember playing out there years ago, maybe at C11. Who knows, it was a good 10 years ago. Anyway these warehouses began having artists and bands live there many many years ago. Over the years I have had a few friends live and work out of these places. Been to a few new years parties and shows out this way over the years.
Saturday nights bill includes my local favorites Untied States along with The Selmanaires and A Fight to the Death.

Untied States I enjoy live. Here is a video from a recent show at 529

The Selmanaires confuse me a bit. I only recently have seen them live and it was at an instore on record store day (Criminal Records) I had previously heard some stuff on WREK and really liked what I heard. Dark, gloomy and actually quite cool. Anyway, so i went to check them out at criminal and after talking with a few folks realized that I was about to hear a totally different band than I was expecting. "They used to be a 3 piece back in the day," I was told by a few different folks, all of which said they were better back then and should have left well enough alone.
What I heard was so different from what i remember hearing them sound like. Once the music started I felt like I was shot back to the 80's listening to BritPop bands. Everything from Inspiral Carpets, to Happy Mondays, to that Halloween song by Ministry (when they were a dance band!)Really not my style.
So decide for yourself. They have a big following here in Atl and do well touring from what i hear. This vid is from Record store day at criminal last weekend.

A Fight to the Death is a new name to me.
Here is a bit about them from their myspace page ...
"A Fight to the Death began performing as a full band in the fall of 2007, and has played extensively since then lots of local music festivals, parties, etc. Finally in July of 2008, the band release its self-titled debut LP the CD Release Show on July 19 at the super-awesome Highland Ballroom was a huge success, and AFTTD is very thankful to be connecting with so many people! The band’s sound can perhaps best be described as Avant-Western-Gypsy-Americana. With influences including Ennio Morricone, Ibrahim Ferrer, Nusrat Fateh Ali-Khan, AFTTD makes Avant-Americana-Gypsy-Rock music that is steeped in old-world imagery."
Members have come from defunct atlanta bands such as Myssouri, Crybaby and No River City. Their music is interesting. Some of the tracks sound almost carnival like to me. Others with frantic piano. I will let you form your own opinion.
Here is a video

So these 3 bands will all be playing Saturday night April 25th out in the West End area of Atlanta. D12 south space now called Fishmarket. 675 Metropolitan Parkway

Clermont Lounge & Hotel For Sale

Photo Charles_Jeffress

So the Clermont Lounge & Hotel, an image of Atlanta nightlife is up for sale. Asking price a mere 6.5 million. With the daily/weekly/monthly rooms, strip club/music venue downstairs, and nice smell to go along with it all who wouldn't want it.
All the characters and jukebox will transfer to the new owners, haha.

Here is a brief history

An intro to Blondie

From the AJC
"The Midtown building housing the Clermont Lounge and the Clermont Hotel is for sale for $6.5 million.
Gene Kansas, the agent handling the sale, said there no plans to close the 44-year-old lounge, known for its colorful clientele and strippers who look to be retirement age. Jeff Notrica, who heads Inman Park Properties, owns the building on Ponce de Leon Avenue.
Kansas said he’s marketing the property as a possible apartment building similar to the Chelsea in Manhattan, which attracted edgy artsy types.
“It could be creative, cool and fabulous,” he said.

Sleepwalking through the Mekong

My love for the band Dengue Fever begins with an introduction of 60's Cambodian pop music thanks to the great people over at Sublime Frequencies and their release "Cambodian Cassette Archives: Khmer Folk & Pop music Vol. 1 CD SF011." which I highly recommend. I have visited Southeast Asia many times which include 3 trips to Cambodia. So, I have a special place in my heart for the country.
Anyway, a couple of years back while listening to KUSF online I heard Dengue Fever and fell in love with their sound.

Here is a quick qoute from their website:
"Dengue Fever is a six-member band from Los Angeles who combine Cambodian pop music and lyrics with psychedelic rock. They were formed in 2001 by Ethan Holtzman and his brother Zac after Ethan was inspired by a trip to Cambodia. As Ethan and Zac were searching for a vocalist to sing in Khmer, lead singer Chhom Nimol was discovered in a nightclub in Little Phnom Penh area of Long Beach. She was already a well-known karaoke singer from Cambodia, but decided to move to US after visiting her sister, and thought it was a good chance to make more money to send to her family back home. [1] Zac performs vocals and guitar, while Ethan plays the Farfisa organ. Rounding out the band are bassist Senon Williams (who also plays in Radar Bros), drummer Paul Smith, and David Ralicke on brass."

"ABOUT DENGUE FEVER
Dengue Fever (http://www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic) is Chhom Nimol – who sang regularly for the King and Queen of Cambodia - Ethan Holtzman (keyboards), Zac Holtzman (guitar), David Ralicke (horns), Senon Williams (bass) and Paul Smith (drums). The band’s music has been featured in a number of film and television shows including CITY OF GHOSTS, MUST LOVE DOGS, BROKEN FLOWERS, HBO’s hit series TRUE BLOOD and twice on Showtime’s, WEEDS. They have released three albums, Dengue Fever, Escape From Dragon House, Venus On Earth and are set to release their DVD/CD soundtrack to the documentary Sleepwalking Through The Mekong on April 14, 2009."

AxemRangers
AxemRangers is a oneman experimental sound project started in the fall of 2006, based in Webster, New York. Using very minimal equipment (because he is very cheap), the goal of AxemRangers is grounded more in personal expression of emotions, moods and ideas rather that a pure focus on sonic aesthetics and intellectual composition. This may or may not be a copout. He operates the Cracked Bat Tapes label.

The Missing Middle

The Missing Middle is the creation of two musicians from Buffalo New York, inspired by exotica, industrial, pop, and soundtracks. Started in 2006, The Missing Middle has released an EP titled "death of dichotomy" and is currently in the studio completing their debut album "Ritual of the Modern Savage" for a spring release.

The Vivi Sect
The Vivi Sect is a leaky vessel, expunging and taking on musicians as the tide allows. Founding member Red Cell has helmed the vessel in all it's various incarnations over the last 7 years. The Vivi Sect explores all musically known shores, from cylinder recordings of the 1800s to electro-ballads and folk songs, in search of unique and interesting aural ephemera. We are currently working with The Jism Archives (a new upstart experimental and avant-garde label) to set up a web page, so we are currently webless.

No It Is Opposition
"Back in the 80s, Sven and Mike played in different local bands in East Westphalia in Western Germany. We started doing music as members of “Out Of Days” who did a demo tape called “No Tragedy This Time” and split in 1991. While Mike retired from music for quite a time, Sven joined “Me In The Rye” who published some demo tapes (e.g. “Atmen heißt urteilen”, “Blondes”) and the album “Atmosphaerehandel” in 1994, produced by Mathias Arfmann of “Kastrierte Philosophen”. “Me In The Rye” played as support for artists such as “Swell”, Nikki Sudden and "The Television Personalities”. Sven and Mike formed “No It Is Opposition” in 1997. Originally planned as an outfit for two old men sitting in armchairs playing acoustic music with guitars (“industrial chamber music”), Sven and Mike recorded a demo CD called “Prisoners’ Poetry” in 1998. After that, from time to time we hooked up to keep the guitars and the armchairs warm, but no new work was recorded. After a second seven-year-break we were asked to take part in the “Beyond The Horizon”-project which we did with great pleasure. If you'd like to learn more about “Beyond The Horizon”, please go here: www.myspace.com/tributetoaatt.
“Beyond The Horizon” was a new start; so we decided to do own pieces again. We finished the “Prisoners' Poetry”-circle in 2006 and right now, we are busy with new pieces which we hope to release via our own website in the near future. Prisoners' Poetry will see a release only in May 2009, but that's another story..."

Vampyramidf/F
Vampyramidf/F formed in 2008 in Boston, MA. Upon its conception, the project was intended to remain a dualistic endeavor.
F=environmentally sensitive/ritual based recording and performance
F=pure liquid/pop non-structures dissolve into soaking confusion

Phallus Dei featuring John Walker
In the beginning OLIVER ST. LINGAM releases the tapes "Pigfuck" and "Per Crucem Ad Lucem" on the "Unclean"-label under the guise of PHALLUS DEI, named after an album by Krautrock legends AMON DÜÜL. Shortly after, PHALLUS DEI signed with the label Dark Vinyl, who released the first CD "Pontifex Maximus". It is amongst the most successful debuts of an Industrial band in 1991. After a successful tour with Italian Industrial legends
SIGILLUM S, the personnel changed. MK. E. ,who was with them on tour, joined the band. Also, Dutch drummer / multi-instrumentalist RICHARD VAN KRUYSDIJK (who now also works with Niels van Hoorn (the Legendary Pink Dots) as STRANGE ATTRACTOR, and with Marie-Claudine Vanvlemen as SONAR LODGE) joined the band. The trio recorded several songs, later to be released on the album "Cyberflesh". JORIS HUIJBREGTS, who also features on this CD, played previously with Richard in the band Lament, and joined PHALLUS DEI a year later. Together they recorded the critically acclaimed albums "Pornocrates", "Luxuria" (feat. Gitane Demone), "Orpheus & Eurydice", as well as "Universum"; a CD by their ambient side-project PHD2. After Joris left in 1995, they continued as a trio, shifting their sound more and more towards electronica and experimental, cinematic music. A "best of"-CD ("Adorations") was released by Triple X in the USA, and after a period when the band members concentrated on different projects, they came back strong in 2001 with a new album: "Nature Mortes". As PHD2 they released their second album, entitled "Resource".
Track features John Walker of the Walker Brothers

Salakapakka Sound System

Salakapakka Sound System started making electronic/experimental/concrete/electro-acoustic music in 2007. Earlier in 2007 Salakapakka Sound System´s sole core member Marko-V made under his own name "Kahden Kulttuurin Ääniä", musique concrete work which incorporated Japanese and Finnish field sounds. In 2008 SSS put out "Buddha Machines on Fire" CD-r which is made of loops and samples from FM3 Buddha Machine and other Buddhist loop jukeboxes. Second release "Ikuinen Kaamos" three-inch mini CD-r featured dark and haunting electro-acoustic soundscapes. All releases are self made CD-r`s which are available for download at MarkoV´s blog at ikuinen-kaamos.blogspot.com.
Next SSS-related release will be Marko & Myky: "Mekonium Baby", concrete music made of Marko-V´s baby daughter´s sounds. In 2009 there will be at least two more Salakapakka Sound System -releases.

A Forgotten Tales
Inspired by artists like TG, NON, SWANS, DI6, the German ambient/experimental project "a forgotten tale" started writing songs in early 2000. Six years later "aft" moved to Vienna, Austria. Now, living in this "kaiserliche Reichshauptstadt" new impressions created new tales,
which will be forgotten... if no one listens.

Joseph Nechvatal
Since 1986 Joseph Nechvatal has worked with ubiquitous electronic visual information, computers and computer-robotics. His computer-robotic assisted paintings and computer software animations are shown regularly in galleries and museums throughout the world. From 1991-1993 he worked as artist-in-resident at the Louis Pasteur Atelier and the Saline Royale / Ledoux Foundation's computer lab in Arbois, France on The Computer Virus Project: an experiment with computer viruses as a creative stratagem. In 2002 he extended that artistic research into the field of viral artificial life through his collaboration with the programmer Stéphane Sikora.

Tearpalm
Tearpalm is a sonic cocoon knit to fit the needs of Mr M. D.- a writer, art historian, and guitar slinger for/founder member of short-lived Serbian alternative bands Future Zen Terror and Paganska ljubav. The idea behind Tearpalm was to go beyond discursive limitations of routinized treatment of musicmaking, by employing exploration of psychedelic potentials of frequency tweaking, software based simulations of tape loop/sound collage techniques and manipulating of previously recorded tracks much rather than playing live instruments.

Elvatorium

Elvatorium is a collaboration between Tom Maggio from USA and Radek Kordasiewicz from Poland. They continue their collaborative work since late 2006. Elvatorium's first album "At Border Of Disorder" (recorded with guest saxophonist Janusz Kruszelnicki) has been released through Amduscias Records netlabel in September 2007. This year sees the duo working with guests Troy Southgate (of H.E.R.R.) on vocals and again Janusz Kruszelnicki on the saxophone.
