AkuYou Interview and CD Review

BeAtlanta.com has posted an interview and cd review with my project AkuYou. The interview was done with Clara and I a few weeks ago.

"Holy Hell. These girls just turned my brain inside out. This brand-new Atlanta band just let eight infinitely forceful songs loose on a split release with Grammal Seizure, a one man band from Maryland. AkuYou, consisting of Kim Chee and Clara Clamp, doesn’t seem to easily fit into any existing musical genre that I am aware of, unless pineal gland rock has already been coined. Using multiple effects and well thought out instrumentation, Kim shapes unique sound textures, which surround both Clara’s vocals and some pounding percussion that will certainly wake you up. Their song Bass Split is a perfect example. It flawlessly imitates the sounds one’s brain might produce while having a not-so-great experience on a strong psychedelic drug… plus drums. If this doesn’t sound fun to you then you need to just get over it and give it a try anyways. If you desire something a bit less ambient, their song SS has a bit more of a driving force, which really allows Clara to show you what she’s got. Or there is Henry, my personal favorite, which lies somewhere in the middle. Set aside the time to lie down, grab your biggest head-phones, concentrate, and experience AkuYou. You wont regret it."

Just came across this video recently. Years ago Pineal Ventana did some music for Chad Rullman's short film "Kotoran Jiwa." The video below is a Director Reel from Chad posted on YouTube with clips from some of his work which includes videos of Mastodon and Neurosis. The backing music on the video is from Pineal Ventana.

Hallux : Brooklyn Via Atlanta

Hallux from NYC/Brooklyn consists of 3 Atlanta transplants that made a mark on the Atlanta local music scene back in the 90's. (Jake Klotz is the vocalist for Hallux, not from the ATL) Hallux is dirdge metal, sluggish, heavy drop C? tuning sort of stuff.


Andrew Barker on guitar. He still plays with Atlanta Jazz greats the "Gold Sparkle Band." They were one of my favorites acts back in Atlanta during the 90's and still going strong in NYC. (Charles Waters is still involved). They relocated to NYC. Andrew was also in another GREAT Atlanta Band called "Melts."

Jason LaFarge was a band member and good friend of mine in Pineal Ventana. He moved to NYC and started his own recording studio in Brooklyn. Seizures Palace is "Home of the Gowanus Sound." He has worked with names such as Akron Family, Michael Gira and Devendra Banhart. (many others) Jason is a busy guy and has a few projects going including Hallux and Blue Prostitutes.

Hans Chew played in numerous Atlanta bands and drums in Hallux. Funny how all these guys ended up playing metal in NYC! I always knew him as a drummer round these parts but his piano and keys playing is out of this world! He also plays in a NYC band The Helix which is the backup band for Dave Shuford. (another Atlanta transplant)under the name D Charles Speer.

Our Heat Your Moisture Comp 1998

This cd compilation was put together by my old PV band mates Mitch and Clara back in 1998. I really like a lot of the music on here and since it is essentially out of print I figure I would turn on some of you to it's goodness. There was an awesome cd release show held in Atlanta on April 11 1998 at the Somber Reptile. There were 3 stages set up for the bands and most represented that day.

Mitchell Foy and Clara Clamp (Pineal Ventana) use their Atlanta-based SCUSS Media to promote varied and challenging experimentation on their compilation. The limited edition of 500 copies comes in a hand-printed and assembled tar paper cover. 26 projects are presented from Georgia, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Boston, Michigan, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Some are recognized and important rock-based, boundary challengers like God Is My Co-Pilot, William Carlos Williams, Morsel, and Pineal Ventana. As for God Is My Co-Pilot, there is another interesting project here of dulcet female vocals over jerky guitar and bass rhythms, New Jersey's Suran Song in Stage. Some of the bands sound like clever sample manipulators working in their bedroom with four-tracks (Another Dead Sharon and Melted Men for example). Regardless of their notoriety or method, most of these artists give us something oddly delightful, like the inexplicable dervishes of few words, Turkish Delight. Noisy and experimental, clamorous and eclectic, there is a certain similarity here in a cohesive vision of damaged art based on quirky rhythms and dissonant guitars. One also finds that many of the Georgia bands boast similarly styled names: Glenn Lizzy, Medaglia D'oro, Mary Baked Eddie, Bob, and Dan Acaroid Resin Factory. One wonders if this isn't a revolving cast of the Pineal Ventana crowd, la San Fran's similarly cacophonous and moniker-happy Caroliner network. Regardless of any manipulations of personnel, the manipulations presented here from the basic rock combo are generally refreshing and worthwhile. ~ Tom Schulte, All Music Guide

A couple of the fine folks from Pineal Ventana put this compilation together. Seventeen of the 26 bands hail from Atlanta or Athens (Ga.), with the rest coming from places east of the Mississippi.

If you know Pineal Ventana, then you might know what to expect here. Plenty of rather unusual (most would use the phrase "fucking weird") music (again, some might disagree with the term "music"). Heinous Bienfang (reviewed earlier in the issue) is here, as is Pineal Ventana, Go Is My Co-Pilot (see?), William Carlos Williams (also reviewed in this issue), Tweezer and one of my favorites, Morsel (from Michigan).

Pretty much indescribable as a whole, but if you're a Skin Graft fan, or otherwise someone who digs the whole noise pop movement (emphasis on noise, probably), well, there's a trove of treasure on this disc.

It may be fucking weird, but others might use the word "brilliant".

Atlanta Music Scene 90's

So I have a few mp3's to post today. Unfortunately the quality isn't great as these are ripped from 7" vinyl records. Atlanta Music Scene RIP.


Suzy Beat was my friend Harvey LaRue's band. A three piece that belted out great distorted heavy riffs. Add a bit of vocals which always were overpowered bu the music and you have Suzy Beat. Jim Prible, who has played with lots of Atlanta bands over the years and Mike sorry don't remember Mike's last name) rounded out the trio.

King Kill 33 is the next band I have a track from. King Kill 33 was formed around 1990 in Atlanta. Very hard to describe band that used visuals along with the music. They have some good tracks up on their myspace site. Mitchell Foy sang for King Kill/33 before the creation of Pineal Ventana. Along with Keith Lee on guitar, Donna Smith on Bass and a revolving door of drummers. Myspace has all the details!

Clobber did really great straight forward punk/indie/whatever rock. Another three piece formed in Atlanta in the early 90's. Jim Pribble pops up again in this band with Allan Ross and Tim Campion. Their early bassist was Shannon Mulvaney. Again check out their Myspace.

Clobber - Get Smart


Next up is Tweezer! I loved this band and all the peeps in it. Pineal Ventana played so many local shows with Tweezer and even did a short little tour with both them and another Atlanta band Bob. Always fun live and loud, just like I want it. They put out two cd's I believe. One was a split with another great band from Nashville called Spider Virus. Pineal Ventana (the band I was in) was close with Tweezer, Bob and Suzy Beat. We all had relations with Half Baked Records and did a split 7" with 4 bands. Unfortunately right now I have no BOB to post. Hopefully soon, as they were a treat to the Atlanta scene.

Tenth to the Moon

One of the more interesting bands out of Atlanta right now is Tenth to the Moon. Sounds of old, sounds of new, synths, drums and lots of imagination. Mitchell Foy (King Kill 33, Pineal Ventana, Terminal IF among other projects) is at the helm with a revolving door of members and contributors. Doug Hughes is the other constant. New cd is due out on Aug 7 2008 with a FREE show in Atlanta at the Star Bar. Stickfigure is releasing the cd. Definitely something different to check out!
