New Chinese Stars Video

So my northern friends up in Providence have a new video for their song "Body" off their newly released album "Heaven on Speed Dial." Chinese Stars have been releasing consistently good music since the breakup of their other band, Arab on Radar. Catchy, off-kilter, screechy vocals, mesmerizing drum patterns, toe tapping good time.

Anchor Brain

Just got word from my buddies up in Providence RI about a great new record label. Anchor Brain, great name considering the whaling and fishing history in this area. Seems like a labor of love between Arab on Radar guys and Six Finger Satellite. Would love to find out who is actually behind this great idea.
Essentially they will NOT release cd's. Everything will be digital downloads and artwork which will be mailed. Here is a description from their mouth,

"Rather than sit back and watch the rapid unraveling of a once exciting and thriving music industry, Anchor Brain has decided to take back the helm and steer things into a new direction…FORWARD!

What is ANCHOR BRAIN? It is a new record label whose goal is to utilize fresh marketing ideas to bring international attention to the many amazing and unique bands originating in Providence, R.I. Plans include replacing obsolete Compact Discs with limited-edition silkscreened posters that come complete with a download code for the record. The label will also release limited-edition silk screened LP’s, subscription-only unreleased tracks and will have worldwide digital distribution.

Through these ideas Anchor Brain hopes to curb the rampant downloading theft of independent music and reaffirm the respect that listeners once had for the blood sweat and tears that went into making records.

The first three bands to be signed by the label are The Chinese Stars, Six Finger Satellite, and Sensitive Hearts. The label will unleash these three records in October of 2009. So beware…"

Sounds great doesn't it! Especially with the amount of Providence bands that I already like I am hoping this will help keep them around and expose others to their creativity.

Right now they are offering up tasty mp3s from the upcoming releases.

Rabbit Face - Chinese Stars
Wilson P - Six Finger Satellite
Scratchy - Sensitive Hearts

Support this label I have a feeling they will release some great stuff.

Random Music

First up is Bossman. A band from Providence RI, active during the 90's. Ties to the defunct band Laurels. We once crashed at their place after a show with them. Really cool sounds, echoey and jerky.

Miss May 66 from Columbus OH. They helped us get shows in OH which was great. Nice people playing a sort of power pop I guess. Catchy songs. Not sure where they are now. I know the drummer went on to play with a few other band round Columbus.

Morsel from Ann Arbor MI. Awesome band. Around during the 90's. Great mix of controlled noise with melodies. They helped us get shows in and around that area. We played together many many times. Excellent band!

The Stimulants were a 3 piece all girl pop/rock band from here in Atlanta. Good vocals helped them stand out a bit in the city. Fun to watch. Not sure how long they were around for. We played with them at Dotties quite a bit. Wonder where Sue is?

I Love Providence RI Bands!

Let me begin by saying I was and still am a HUGE Arab on Radar fan. I was so upset when they went their separate ways a few years back. I thank the powers that be that they have continued to excite me with their musical endeavors. I first met AOR while on tour in the mid 90's. Made fast friends and became a fan for life. Great music from great guys! Just to give a bit of props, Drop Dead is also from the same area and has been pounding out the hardcore/grindcore for years. (since 90 I think) anyway Ben from Drop Dead is faithful to the Providence scene. He runs a record store, Armageddon up there and is big in the DIY scene. And on another note, my props go out to Load records because everything they put out is AMAZING! ala Lightning Bolt for example. Another older Load band Astoveboat holds a special place in my heart. They sing songs about whaling. Great concept! The drummer Dale is from Glazed Baby.

First I will start with Made in Mexico. This would be Jeff's new band following Arab on Radar split. VERY post-punk sort of stuff. Female singer, 4 piece band. For me I get a feeling of US Maple or Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. They even got a song on Guitar Hero.

Next on the Agenda would be Athletic Automation which is Steve's band.

Nice and noisey, just like I like it!
