Back in the USA
Back in the US after a great trip to Nepal. Spent 24 days around the central and southern areas and had a blast! Will post some photos as soon as I go through the 8gigs worth of them.
Also will be posting a short video of a local band playing on the street in the town of Pokhara Nepal. One original song and one cover (Black Sabbath!) They are called "Creeping Thorns."
So that's my excuse for not posting for a while.
Hopefully back on track now.

Cambodian Cassette
I heard a track off this release years ago on KUSF. Cambodian 60's music that was discovered in some library in California and compiled by Mark Gergis. 150 tapes were found in all. Most of the music is from the 60's before Pol Pot and a few tracks after 1975. Very poprock and very cool. The guitar tones are so great.
Here is a sample track.

The Beginning of the End for Cd's?
Interesting story on Foxnews.com today about ... albums being sold on memory cards instead of cd's with no copyright protections!!!
"SanDisk Corp., four major record labels and retailers Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are hoping that albums sold on microSD memory cards will at least provide an additional stream of sales. The companies unveiled plans Monday to sell memory cards loaded with music in the MP3 format, free of copy protections."
They are calling it SlotMusic.

Killdozer
"So it was confirmed by Michael Gerald this week that Killdozer is playing more than just their Madison, Wisconsin show on September 20th. They have added five confirmed and two tentative shows in the US. All the details that are known at this time is on the show listings of this myspace page.
I have no details regarding show time, door price, whether they are all ages or bar shows or anything else besides dates and venues at this point. I am also entirely clueless if these are going to be the final Killdozer shows of what the status of the band is. I just post the information once Michael Gerald emails it to me.
In other news Michael Gerald has confirmed that former Killdozer guitarist, Paul Zagoras (1993-1996) will join the Hobson/Gerald/Hobson line-up for a few of their songs at their show in Madison on September 20th as part of the Forward Music Festival." Taken from myspace blog.

No Age back in the South
No Age is back again to support their "Nouns" album which released earlier this year. This time round I only see dates for Athens at the 40 Watt on Nov 14 2008. No Atlanta show listed. They were here back in July with Abe Vigoda at Eyedrum which is a great place to see a band.

I Love Providence RI Bands!
Let me begin by saying I was and still am a HUGE Arab on Radar fan. I was so upset when they went their separate ways a few years back. I thank the powers that be that they have continued to excite me with their musical endeavors. I first met AOR while on tour in the mid 90's. Made fast friends and became a fan for life. Great music from great guys! Just to give a bit of props, Drop Dead is also from the same area and has been pounding out the hardcore/grindcore for years. (since 90 I think) anyway Ben from Drop Dead is faithful to the Providence scene. He runs a record store, Armageddon up there and is big in the DIY scene. And on another note, my props go out to Load records because everything they put out is AMAZING! ala Lightning Bolt for example. Another older Load band Astoveboat holds a special place in my heart. They sing songs about whaling. Great concept! The drummer Dale is from Glazed Baby.
First I will start with Made in Mexico. This would be Jeff's new band following Arab on Radar split. VERY post-punk sort of stuff. Female singer, 4 piece band. For me I get a feeling of US Maple or Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. They even got a song on Guitar Hero.
Next on the Agenda would be Athletic Automation which is Steve's band.

Nice and noisey, just like I like it!
Chinese Stars round out the after Arab groups.

The best off kilter, good beats, dancing music I can think of.
MP3's
Arab on Radar - Number 3
Athletic Automation - Hands without Feet
The Chinese Stars - Arson
The Chinese Stars - Cold Cold Cold
Made in Mexico - Farewell Myth
Lightning Bolt - Dracula Mtn
Astoveboat - Appariation

Evangelista - Drunken Unicorn Atlanta 08.23.08
Evangelista put on a great set last night here in the atl. Drunken Unicorn was the venue, they were the middle band on the bill with Xiu Xiu headlining. Honestly I really haven't listened much to Evangelista. My good friend has been raving bout them for a while now. Last time we were in NYC they were playing and we missed their set by an hour. I always forget how early things seem to start in up there. Anyway, we arrived about 10 minutes before their set at Drunken Unicorn. Just the right amount to get drink in hand and head over the side stage. For some reason I hate standing directly in front of the stage. Not sure why but i tend to gravitate over to the sides.
So as usual most of the photos are from this angle. On to the show, Carla Bozulich has one of the strongest most confident voices I have ever heard. She is not shy and puts it out there. She definitely has the talent to pull it off. I thought the whole band was great. The whole set had a cohesiveness, accomplished by the gradual highs and lows of the emotions of the songs. The set was intense yet beautiful. I was VERY impressed. So below I have a few photos I took at the show.

Snowman My New Favorite Band
So I have been turned on to a GREAT band out of Perth Australia called Snowman. They are a 4 piece lineup with 4 releases to their name. From what I understand they have quite a buzz going round Australia and with a recent review of their new album "The Horse, the Rat and the Swan" in Pitchfork Magazine I believe they are well on their way to opening up the eyes of many.
The new album is an awesome listen from start to finish. The elements of angry intense vocals, fragmented at times helps mesh the driving percussion with all other layers. I feel each track stands alone yet is needed to complete the whole listening experience from beginning to end. For me, Snowman brings elements of Nick Cave and other dark geniuses together into one place. From what I have listened to I definitely like their newest effort the best. Very different from older releases and much angrier.
here is a video off the new album

Atlanta Music Scene 90's
So I have a few mp3's to post today. Unfortunately the quality isn't great as these are ripped from 7" vinyl records. Atlanta Music Scene RIP.
Suzy Beat was my friend Harvey LaRue's band. A three piece that belted out great distorted heavy riffs. Add a bit of vocals which always were overpowered bu the music and you have Suzy Beat. Jim Prible, who has played with lots of Atlanta bands over the years and Mike sorry don't remember Mike's last name) rounded out the trio.
Enjoy a few mp3s from Suzy Beat
Suzy Beat - 31 Chair Caboose
Suzy Beat - Cherry Bomb
King Kill 33 is the next band I have a track from. King Kill 33 was formed around 1990 in Atlanta. Very hard to describe band that used visuals along with the music. They have some good tracks up on their myspace site. Mitchell Foy sang for King Kill/33 before the creation of Pineal Ventana. Along with Keith Lee on guitar, Donna Smith on Bass and a revolving door of drummers. Myspace has all the details!
King Kill/33 - Ditch Digger
Clobber did really great straight forward punk/indie/whatever rock. Another three piece formed in Atlanta in the early 90's. Jim Pribble pops up again in this band with Allan Ross and Tim Campion. Their early bassist was Shannon Mulvaney. Again check out their Myspace.
Hey Allan let me know if I need to remove the mp3.
Clobber - Get Smart
Next up is Tweezer! I loved this band and all the peeps in it. Pineal Ventana played so many local shows with Tweezer and even did a short little tour with both them and another Atlanta band Bob. Always fun live and loud, just like I want it. They put out two cd's I believe. One was a split with another great band from Nashville called Spider Virus. Here are a few Tweezer mp3's for your enjoyment. All tracks from 7" vinyl.
Tweezer - Piehole
Tweezer - Deep Inside
Tweezer - Smegmatic Overdrive
Tweezer - Firebug
Pineal Ventana (the band I was in) was close with Tweezer, Bob and Suzy Beat. We all had relations with Half Baked Records and did a split 7" with 4 bands. Unfortunately right now I have no BOB to post. Hopefully soon, as they were a treat to the Atlanta scene.
Pineal Ventana - Let Them ... (from 12" vinyl pic disc)
Pineal Ventana - Alimentary School
Pineal Ventana - Attack 50ft Cannibal Clownz
Pineal Ventana - 15 minutes (live)
Pineal Ventana - Philosopher's Stone
Pineal Ventana - Cheese of the Month
Enjoy!!!!!!!

Tenth to the Moon
One of the more interesting bands out of Atlanta right now is Tenth to the Moon. Sounds of old, sounds of new, synths, drums and lots of imagination. Mitchell Foy (King Kill 33, Pineal Ventana, Terminal IF among other projects) is at the helm with a revolving door of members and contributors. Doug Hughes is the other constant. New cd is due out on Aug 7 2008 with a FREE show in Atlanta at the Star Bar. Stickfigure is releasing the cd. Definitely something different to check out!

Gamelan & Indonesia
I have traveled to Indonesia a few times now and am always anxious to return again. I am always blown away by the amazing music that is heard all over the country. Although it varies a bit from the Eastern islands back to the West the root seems to stay the same. I find the Balinese style of Gamelan the most interesting. To me at least, it seems more frantic and urgent than the Javanese styles.
Usually when i travel I get turned on to at least one local "pop" band that has made a name for themselves. On my last trip to Indonesia it was Peterpan. I actually like their stuff but I am sure it has a lot to do with where my mind is at when I heard them for the first time. I was traveling with a local named Adrian across Flores island in Eastern Indonesia on our way to the town of Moni. The drive lasted for a few hours winding around mountain passes with only room for one car most of the time. Smells of sulfur from the active volcanoes and moisture from the dense foliage with the occasional person selling local liquor "arak" on the sides of the road.

Teenage Jesus & the Jerks Reunion
Went up to NYC to see the reunion show for Teenage Jesus & the Jerks. Friday June 13 at the knitting factory. I really thought I would never see these songs performed live and wow did I enjoy it!
Jim Sclavunos was on drums, Thurston Moore on bass and of course Lydia. The banter between the audience and Lydia was exactly what I expected. Loved every minute of it.
Below is a few minutes of video I took. enjoy....
